I am a big lover of my protein. Without fail, my mornings start with a good blend of protein and complex carbs to get the day going, and I have learned to always have a post workout shake with me
otherwise I become the hangry shopper and all kinds of madness can end up in my cart. I am generally a creature of habit, but I every so often I get bored with the protein I have at home and want to change things up. I was pretty stoked when this showed up a few weeks ago:
I was already familiar with Manitoba Harvest, I add their Hemp Hearts to my salads and oats for the extra protein and omegas. I jumped at the opportunity to try their protein, but honestly was a little apprehensive. I’ve tried a few different brands of plant (pea) based protein in the past and they were awful. Not. A. Fan. I love me some good old split pea soup, but I am not down with protein that feels like I dumped a handful of sand into my shaker bottle with it. I can’t get over the grit that I taste when it goes down, or that it sits in my mouth after. Yeah, I have a thing about textures when it comes to food and drink. You too? Just me? Waste not, want not, we’ve gone through some pretty nasty stuff in our house for the sake of making gains. Yes, all about the gains, and the post workout recovery and if the macros add up, count me in. The chocolate is made with hemp protein concentrate, organic coconut sugar, organic fair trade cocoa powder, natural plant extracts. That’s it. Short and sweet. Kinda like me. Ha! How does HempPro 70 break it down?
Well done, Manitoba Harvest, I like what I’m seeing. I made quick work of the chocolate, and the first thing I noticed was how easily it mixed up. It didn’t have any of the powdery chunks that often get left behind, even when I use my shaker bottles.
I opted to have it as just a shake rather than blended into a smoothie just so I didn’t have any other flavors or ingredients mixing things up. I started to go through my usual chug-and-go and realized I wasn’t grimacing, gagging, or hoping it would be over soon. Ha, total win! No joke, I was nicely surprised that it didn’t have the gritty texture I tend to expect from a plant-based protein. Unfortunately, I was without anything iTech to snap pictures of the vanilla, but it made for a yummy mix-in to up the protein content of my yogurt for a late night snack the other night!
Most of my fellow gym rats are all about the whey protein and shy away from plant based proteins for the same reasons as I do – low protein content and taste. In my book, Manitoba Harvest really has a winner here. They keep it clean and simple and offer a few different options to fit any dietary need, including just the hemp by itself or one with added fiber.
